When
tracing Native American history, stumbling into Cherokee Nation is only natural. This tribal was and is one of the
biggest Native American tribes left in America. In 19th Century, The
Nation, as it is called by its inhabitants, this tribe consisted of the
Cherokee inhabitants of Qualla Boundary who moved to the Indian Territory
voluntarily to the southeastern side of United States. The way Cherokee Nation
lives now and then, however, is different from many different aspects. Though
the people in Cherokee Indian Nation today are still the descent of what it was
in 19th Century, but the system of living has now changed.
Cherokee Nation in 19th Century
For
the government, the Cherokee Nation chose to adopt written constitution and
built their government consisted of three branches. They are executive,
legislative, and judicial. As the legislature of the Nation, the National
Council selected a Principal Chief. The Cherokee
Nation was reunited in September 16 1839, and since then the celebration of
Labor Day is marked with Cherokee Nation Holiday. Tahlequah then became the
capital city of the Nation. The Nation itself was consisted of different Cherokee
Tribe: Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Cherokee Nation –West, and United
Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. Besides of these three tribes, there are
also several other tribes inhabited the Nation, such as Natchez people, the
Delaware, Cherokee Freedmen, and many more.
Cherokee Nation Today
The
growth of economic growth for the Nation and its people is remarkable since a
new constitution were drafted in 1975. To be enrolled to the Cherokee Nation,
people need to have a direct Indian ancestor whose name is in Dawes Rolls list.
Cherokee Nation nowadays has also become one of United States’ leading
advocates in ecological protection.
Despite
the more modern way of living though, still holds their ancestors’ culture at
heart. They preserve the historic inheritance in foundations such as Cherokee
Heritage Center. There is also a foundation supporting fund services to the
people of Cherokee Nation.
